Last week my gar started having some seizures and went belly up but he then came back to. I thought it was some sort of gill parasite. I treated the tank for 4 days w/ tetracycline. I have a 120 gallon tank so I dosed it for 80 gallons to play it safe. Four days into treatment there was no sign of improvement so I did a 40 gallon w/c. My filter media was quite dirty. I normally do weekly 40 gallon w/c's. But I recently added 6 bichirs to the tank and I am now having to feed a bit more. Maybe it was the dirty tank that caused this problem????? Should I do 40 gallon(30%)w/c twice a week?

1. tetracycline does not affect any form of parasite that would be in the gills. It is an antibiotic that is only good for certain bacteria...
2. the only parasite would be Gill flukes of which would not cause this behavior or the symptoms described..... these are not bacteria ...See point #1...
3. your fish has a neurological disorder... This could be caused by an injury or by chemical toxicity... If an injury it may work it self out.. If toxicity you need to find out what and eliminate it...

poly....My water parameters are good. I do w/c every 3 days and keep clean my filters regularly...but not too much to rid of all the bacterial colonies. I have no idea what is causing this. I lost a jack dempsey as well as a dojo loach to this same thing in the last 6 months. Im clueless...
The water conditioner is the one I do use full dosage. His tank is getting small for him as well. But that cant be it cause the dojo loach and the dempsey were small for the size of the tank. Im still lost. But im going to my parents in a month or so and im gonna put him a large pond.

It looks like maybe I should dose w/ De-los. FOr gill parasites of some sort. But it says to not treat prehistoric fish w/ de-los..such as arrowanas, silver dollars, lion fish etc. Im pretty sure gars are considered pre historic....Yeah?
Well my gar passed today. He is in a better place now not living in pain...making the flowers in the garden grow tall. I checked his gills real well and they looked as clean as could be. So I am clueless as to what was infecting him. All my bichirs look healthy as well as everyone else in the tank. Its gonna be the bichirs home now for a while....make sure they are okay till my pbass go in...the bichirs would eat the pbass now anyway. Thanks for all your help fellow mkf'ers.
