gar ID and feeding question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
in my experience i would have to say that my gar went crazy over raw shelled shrimp. im sure you would get similar results w/ fish fillets and other fresh seafoods. he also loved fd krill and aro pellets.

My Gators love floating Aro pellets.

Grew 10 inches in one month......

man...that is scary!

i've been putting cichlid bio-gold, frozen blood worms and chopped up market shrimp for the other inhabitants of the tank and he hasn't eaten any of it.

it may take a little bit. be patient.

yes, it can take a while to get gars off live food. my gator gar gets a selection of food everyday (prawns/fish/shrimp/bloodworm) and live fish once or twice a month (just to watch her hunt really, its fantastic to watch, cost a bit tho, about 20 fish in 2 days!!). just a quick question. are you planning on keeping your gator gar?? just because they need a HUGE tank. mine outgrown 2 tanks in less than a year!!!!! lol (4x1.5x2 & 6x2x2)
and i didnt think they grew THAT fast. lol

i was going to ask the same...but i figured i would hold off.

$30 is definitely a good price for a small gator these days.

a good food to wean them off live would be frozen silversides or smelt, and raw shrimp also works well. these are smelly foods and will help the fish make the switch. you can use a feeding stick or use your hands to wiggle the food in front of the fish (i would suggest the feeding stick as you don't want to use your hands to feed the gator when it's larger) and it should learn to take it in no time. good luck!--

lol

i was waiting for the tank size question.

he's currently in a 240gl (8X1.5X2.5) and will end up in a 540gl (10X2.5X3) with 150gl sump. think that will do until i have him in a pond in the next 2-3 years?

i honestly dont think he will have 2-3 years in that tank. i think the pond will be needed much sooner.
