Gar ID (P.S. i read the sticky)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks guys :(

i think his pattern is just from being in really low light. he was much darker when the tank was in lots of sunlight.
also, how much does a florida gar sell for normally. i won't be as dissapointed if i knew the $45 i payed for him was worth it.

The price is always right if you like the fish. Plus that seams average and fair.

Something seems off about its snout to me. It looks like the upper jaw slants down more than normal. Maybe its just the photos.

45 is about normal for a florida gar

How large is it? It definitely looks like a Florida gar, but the snout is a little broader than most that I'm used to seeing. That could be related to the size/age of the gar though.

that is one wierd fish!

I'd pay more than 45 for a fish that unique! but since you didn't know how strange the fish is I'd say you scored!

hes 11" and the snout was what made me question the florida gar id in the first place. it seems broad to me and had quite the downturned tip like an alligator. i'll post some pics in a few months once he gets to 18" or so so you can all see how he turns out. just remind me!!!

I think that it is definitely a Florida gar despite the unusual snout. The snout length and width of gars is highly variable in captivity; they often develop shorter and broader snouts instead of the more natural long and thin snout.

hmm, what am i missing here? i dont really see anything abnormal about it
