Hope you guys can see the picture. It's about 7-8". The lfs had him priced at $79 at first then it didn't sell for a long time and my bro asked the guy to drop the price so he calls his son (supposedly his son is an expert at prices) and his son tells him that gar is rare around this time and he cranked the price up to like $170.

Just wondering is this guy is full of it or is this gar really going at that price.

To his credit, I've never seen this gar anywhere else. At least not where I'm at, Riverside area,...........

It is a Boulengerella species which is a pike-characin... It is not a gar and has little to nothing in common with one.

And the price that guy is asking is obscenely expensive...

Good it's not a gar lol. The pike-characin Boulengerella maculata perhaps? Gets about 16" long. Small teeth but big mouth, otherwise very peaceable.

Also way too expensive, even the first price was too much.

I do believe thats possibly a pure strain giant halfbeak, i see them imported as florida gars around my area by stupid wholesalers naming them wrong or sending them asw replacements for gars they dont have. The price is way too high, especially if it is a giant halfbeak as they only live a couple of years tops
