When they're young I have a hard time telling for sure among the Lepisosteus (shortnose, longnose, spotted, Florida), knowing where it came from really helps there.
Florida gars don't seem to be all that hard to get off feeders, when I got mine he'd eaten 100% feeders his whole life, and while he still generally ignores pellets he took f/d krill the first time I tried it.
