Ding ding ding! We have a pair of winners. Not too hard since they've all been posted here repeatedly. I'll have to look up some online pics to try and stump you guys...

nice job conner; always nice to see updates of the spotted, and good to see the other gars are doing well too!

i've got a stockpile of gar pics as well...so i'll go through and try to find some challenging ones once my quiz is done with (which will likely be this evening) --

My shortnose gars I got from another member on here from Evansville, IN. He collected them himself from the wild. They were in a pond that had gotten sealed off from a river and was drying up. He rescued as many as he could so that they wouldn't just dry out and die. I originally got seven of them from him, but one of them died for unknown reasons after initially being healthy for about 3 months.

So these were from the Ohio river near Evansville?

Not the Ohio River, they were in a pond which was fed by an offshoot from a local river (not the Ohio, something smaller). They had a prolonged dry period, and the stream connecting the pond and river dried up, leaving them stranded in the pond. Then the pond started drying up, so the guy rescued as many as he could fit in a 125g tank (and he probably had about a 100 in there to start with, maybe more).

I don't know the exact location where they were collected, as I didn't do the collecting, and he never told me the name of the river. But I know they came from just west and north of Evansville, IN.
