Gar in the Mississippi!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just an advisory, for what it's worth, Natureserve's distribution map for Alligator Gar is seemingly pessimistic, at least for Texas. None or very little of the upper Trinity, upper Sabine, upper Nueces, or Rio Grande ranges are shown, nor are the lakes that are within those drainages. I've found that to be the case with their records of other native wildlife as well. Cheers,

good point, they have been known to be a little off in some of the finer-scale distributions, that is true and i definitely agree...however, in their northern extent range projection for gator gars, they are accurate. this was also the most easily accessible map to post from online sources...there's plenty in the lit to indicate they are not found in Minnesota, etc.--

Right, I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong about Minnesota 'gator gar by any means, just that the NatureServe maps, in general, might need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Cheers,

no problem, and i didn't take it that way :)

yeah, there needs to be plenty of work done with the natureserve data, but as a course representation of distributions it's a pretty decent and easily-accessible resource to have. trust me, i'd love to head out to texas to fine tune gar distribution data myself if time/resources/personnel allowed! i'll let you know if we put together a trip down there as it would be great to meet up with some more gar-people from out there!--
