I recently got 2 Florida Gars - both similar sizes (5-6 inches) put in with a Silver Bala Shark (8 inches) and a 10-inch Black Ghost Knife Fish in a 39 gallon tank. Is it okay to keep these fish together, or are there any concerns that should be noted?
Also, I've been feeding them small goldfish everyday, but how often should they be fed and how many?

Thanks,

i recently got a florida gar as well...alot of people here told me i need bigger than the 112 tank i was planning to house him in. he is also in with a bgk and its only been 2 days but they get along(too short to tell). he will outgrow your bgk as they are slow growers after 8 inches and florida gars get to a foot their first year.

Okay, thanks.

Florida gars can hit 2 feet in a year. Usually only one but I have seen it happen more than once. Feed them 1 or 2 goldfish daily but make sure to put some variety in their diet. Feed them minnows as well and frozen silver sides if they will take them.

uhm.. or pellets? shrimp.. pretty much anything you would feed any other predatory fish..

Will Guppies do?

I just gave those three as an example. They need varied diets. Only feeding them one type of fish isn't good for them. And gold fish are apparently the worst for feeders. If I were you I would feed him minnows and guppys and various other things. Also you should look into breeding your own guppys. I really enjoyed doing that.

Yes, I actually have bred them. I've got a book about how to breed Guppies.
Thanks for the advice.

maybe you could even go for platies or mollys.. problem is it requires a pretty big tank to have supply of live food.. say 200g or so.. I have seen in your threads you plan for some carnevorous fish and 10 medium sized platy won't get you very far.. unfortunately.. I can't even take a guess on fish prices in kuala lumpur but if it's cheap enough and you have the space to quarantene your feeders and you feed the feeders healthy food you cant beat fresh meat..

Most of us have never seen a 24" FG raised in captivity period, and you've seen one get there in a year?
