thanks for the comments guys. these fish have grown quite a bit over the past year (the only one measured exactly last year was mine, which is the largest of this bunch). the other three are Richards (our fish collections tend to cross over quite a bit in the past couple years) which i have taken care of for over a year or so.
amazing that they look like a decent size in the tank, but then when you're taking them out of the tank/looking at them dorsally they are even larger (not to mention these fish are known for getting quite stocky compared to the other genus).
luckily their close relative (in this tank) has lived with gars for over a year, so he should be fine with them for the few days they will be tankmates
