Gar mouth

[Polypterus]

So I put him in with about 6 minnows and he has been snapping at them but not catching them. I even went out and got silverside fish and put it on a skewer for him and nothing. Won't even snap at the silver side. What would be the next step?

Keep trying..

I keep on trying and nothing. Small pieces of shrimp and also silver sides cut up small. Nothing. I put aquarium salt in and turned the heat up a little and to induce an appetite. What would be the next step.

more minnows. personally if hes snapping but not catching them I would snip the tail fins to slow them down for him, they will grow back eventually but should allow him to catch a few and build his strength up. also make sure there are plenty available.. a few dozen or so. as many as you can put w/ him w/out overloading your filtration and fouling your water.

He is not even trying anymore for the minnow.

He finally are some shrimp last night. It was really the first time he has eaten in a week. I'm happy but it's still not out of the clear. We will see!
