I have been looking into monster fish and really dont know much about gar's. I was wondering if a 100 gallon tank or 150 gallon would be enough for a nice gar. I know that alligator gars even though they are nice, that they will definately outgrow my tank. Not sure yet but I am wanting a gar, just want to see if I could house one responsibly first! Suggestions please.:D

I hate to burst your bubble, but I believe all gars are illegal in Hawaii :(.

all true gar will eventually outgrow your tank but will get a few good years in. spotted and florida gar are the most logical choices and the most common to find.

Dude...trust me on this one. Go to Wahiawa reservoir and catch your own gar. Don't remember what they are, but they are in there. Also, while you are there, can you catch me a couple of those awesome Peacock Bass that are in there as well?
Wahiawa has a lot of Pbass, plecos as long as my leg, oscars, red devils, and even crazy catfish I think are TSN, but not sure and yes the infamous gar (needlenose I think). I lived there for 4 years.

Actually I take that back NOT needlenose I looked it up...but I am really not sure what they were. They resembled like a florida but different but my memory serves me bad so can't remember but they did have spots. Oh and BTW it was agreat place to fish! Wouldn't eat anything out of there though!

If you are thinking of these, they are not gars either. Boulengerella maculata and boulengerella lateristriga are both characins.

I really like those characins. I'm thinking of adding a couple in my 150.

Thanks for the scientific names. Now I can finally research them.
