itll be one week tomorrow. for now he seems to hvae plenty of swimming space. but ill def start looking for a nw home. why in the hell do they even sell a fish like this???

Wow, just one week.
So you’re a newbie. Well i would definably start with 'newbie fish', instead of diving right into the more experienced parts of the hobby.
You have a nice sized tank to make sure you make no more mistakes with the hobby now. I will be happy to talk with you about starter fish and setups etc. You know how private messaging works?

Monster fish are sold in common stores all the time. I suggest you write to your local paper about this pet shop selling fish that can grow to over 14 foot, for your tank that is only 3 or 4 foot!

I am so glad we helped you and your gar from misery!

thanks for the advice and stuff. but i have been into the whole aquarium thing now for several years. im just new to this fish. i really wanted a gar but its not sounding vey likely. what whould be the smallest sized tank you would recoment for a spotted gar. and now that i know i cant accomodate this fish...what do i do w/ it???

ive always wondered this same thing myself. walmart and petsmart/petco both stock pacus, another mosnter fish that gets way too big for the people that shop at those stores for fish to handle. another common monster sold at stores are the multiple species of arowna. for thje amount of these fish comming into the stoeres and being sold out, u would think everyone had a 210 gallon tank to accomodate them. other mosnters i have seen sold are, gars sturgeon, parron catfihs, iredecent sharks, and peacock bass. althought there are plenty of people that can indeed accomodate these fish, the amount of people that cannot should be enuff of a deterent for stores to not caryy them, sadly, its not.

ive been out of the hobby for a few years and i bought a 10 gallon tank 8 months ago. and i bought a tiny 2" ornate bichir (another monster fish) to go in it. i shortly afterwoard discovered that this fish would reach 2 feet in time and outgrow my tiny 10 gallon tank. so the next day i bought a 30 gallon for him.he now 12"s long and 3 months ago i bought him a 100 gallon. still too small for life, but itll do for a while.
i myself, just recenlty purchased a florida gar. and yes my tank(100 gallons) will eventually be way too small. but that doesnt stop me from eventually getting him a much larger tank (im planning a 500 gallon for him and my other monsters).

it has always bothered me that the amount of fish reaching extemely large proportions that come into the stores doesnt equll the amount of equaly large tanks that those fish need exiting the stores. but sadly, theres nuthing we can do. its the way the world is and we all have to do our part in educating the new comers in the hobby and preventing them from making mistakes.

I posted the a while back.

“BIG problems” this is the title of an article in the months PFK. It’s a feature on the Big Fish Campaign - a public aquarium initiative aimed at raising awareness of the issues surrounding tank busters.

If you get a chance pic up a copy its quite frightening how many fish are offered to public aquariums in the UK that are then turned down for example they can’t house them or they just don’t want them.

21 pacus offered 0 taken
17 piranha offered 1 taken
12 pangasius offered 1 taken
10 Giant Gourami offered 0 taken
7 Red Tail offered 0 taken (only 7 where are all the others I see in LFS)
4 Arowana offered 1 taken

This is the one
5 Silver dollars offered 5 taken.

I think this was over a year. They are now starting a “Big Fish Campaign in public aquariums across the UK. They are doing a new intense 3 month survey so let’s see what happens.

how much does a 500 gal tank go for? and what are the dimensions of it? because they always seem to be plenty long and deep but not wide enough. what would be a cool monster fish that would not outgrow my 75gal.

ya, its horrible. even just craiglist, all the free ariampimas, paroons, even giant plecos and goldfish!
ive even seen mekong giants....

i understand that us ]v[onster fish keepers need to be able to find tank busters, but there shuld be like a license/permit process in which u have to have proof of a legit sized tank.

but ya, i have experiecned the difficulty finding homes for potential lagre fish first hand. i remmeber trying to find a home for my baby stergeon............. night mare.

as for a fish that wont outgrw your 75 gallon, u could get 1 oscar. or do an african oddball communtity with a few ctenopomas , a sengal bichir, elephant nose and an african butterfly.........

how biq will a hujeta gar get. i had two of them but one weekend i was away and my crayfish decided they were dinner. he is no longer in there though. i liked them a lot.
