if i were you, i wouldn't be selling the fish for <100 or even 100-200 usd like what people are saying. i don't know if they read your post and realized where you are or the fact that they'll be banned from import. On the other hand, $10k usd is over the top.
remember my example of the senegalus bichir in Australia. If someone from Aus were to ask the same question you're asking now, people on here would be saying $5-$20 tops depending on size, people in SE Asia would say even less. But fact is the fish can go for couple hundreds usd in Aus (at least few years ago).
you probably have the best idea how much realistically you can sell your gar for. If you can sell your 2ft snakehead (what kind is it?) for 1500 usd, then i think you can probably sell your 3-4ft gator in the same price range, or at least in the high hundreds, unless no one wants such a large fish (which will only get bigger) because of lack of space.
JUst so ou know, if you go to sell it and they are now banned, your probably going to have to be able to prove it was around before the ban, otherwise it will be treated like a recently imported fish by law enforcement
hmn... supply and demand, you have the supply, do some market research on the demand, the higher the demand, the higher your price, if you want a quick-ish sale, set your price a bit (but not much) below what the market price tends to be, if anyone enquires as to why your price is set lower, assure them that the fish is totally healthy, the size you state, its just that something came up and you need the cash.
funny thing is, if the price is set higher than the market price, people will want it more, but it will take longer to sell.
I don't believe that any country on earth has a hair splittin' ultra knit-pickin' MONEY GRUBBING judicial system as we have here in the USA, but I would be real careful and investigate the super fine print in the "new law" surounding gar in the Maldives.
You said that they are banned from import but legal to keep if already owned. I am not sure that equates to it is legal to sell the gar that you owned prior to the law change. Just my 2 cents.
Here I guaran-a$$-tee that a source of revenue collection would (AND ALWAY IS!) factored into every new law passed.
Weed (MJ and not Micheal Jordan) has been decrimilized in many states in the USA. You can possess small amounts, but if you get caught selling that same bag your butt is in trouble!

I believe it is legal to sell them, as the fly river turtle has undergone the same sort of importing ban in the United States, but selling your prior-owned specimens is still legal. It leaves a very tiny market of specimens being moved around, upping the price somewhat drastically.

Micheal, It is even far worse then that. You live in a human state (New York)! While it may very well be legal to do this (and many other things for that matter) in New York and most of the 48 other states, it is likely that the Draconian state of Maryland will severly fine you for any human activity deamed pleasurable!
God I wish I never came back from Cali to this gestapoland. Mary my rear end!
