Gar problem, or not

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure pal-whatever you say! You Gar people are too high strung!
Bottom line is it's a matter of prefrence-how does that go "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" Though I will say I have never seen or heard of a Gar even be close to what we like to call a "wet pet" I personally am not a Oscar fan but I have seen some that act like small dogs.

Funny you should say that because that's exactly what my girl says. She says "you don't have a fish, you have a dog that lives in the water".

Also, Gars hunt in low level water conditions and in marshes where they sit at the surface and look for prey. They naturally are accustom to looking outside the water at whats around them and adjusting as such, even squirming across muddy banks to get to a deeper pool of water.

Don't think I've heard of oscars doing anything remotely close to that. :screwy:

Nor have oscars been around millions of years to develop such senses.
You're barking up the wrong tree here, just go play with your pretty little fish and feed it some flakes.

This is getting out of control.
All I wanted to know is it ok to keep my gar in the 80 temporarly until I fix my 60?
And once I fix my 60 and grow him out, could it be possiable to relocate him with the oscar if their the same size, or does it just depend on the individual fish?

Gar keeper....I would agree that A gar is an apex predator, however don't count the oscar out.
I love keeping big carnivores, and I have Video of my Oscar hand feeding and when a feeder hits the water u should see how fast he reacts. IMO I think that the Oscar is just as cool in it's own right.

I've not had a gar long enough to validate what u r saying about him wanting to sit next to u when u r close to the tank, sounds really cool. Hope in time mine does the same.

That's funny a Gar more interesting than an Oscar!!
Let's see a fish that sits at the bottom versus a fish with color and that greets it's owner when he/she walk by the tank.

my gar watch me most of the time. occationaly they lay on the bottom but they are inquisitive and entertaining. if i get near there feeder fish tank, the oldest gar comes right up and begs for food. he knows what it is. the young ones stay away from him when he is in that mood but anywere else in the tank they are the first to beg for food.
feeding time, screw a big splash. comparred to gar or exodons, exspecially the gar hunting, few fish compare.

sorry gar versus oscar when it comes to feeding, raising or just watching, gar will always win.

dont get me wrong, i have seen some nice oscars, just i think gar are better. primitive fish all the way!!!:headbang2

Now to the op, it will be fine for a short amount of time. now it will always be risky to place ur gar wit ur oscar. they could be fine one day and horrible the next. just too dang risky.
And if ur gonna post in this forum, be prepard for a war. Gars have alot of misconseptions about them and we try to correct peoples inproper tank mates and husbandry. we try to be civilzed(WELL some of us:irked:, KFC knows who i mean) but sometimes(ok quite often) new people to gars will not take any of our advice or someone will come along and post knowing full well what arguements could come from it. its a great forum and there are some of us who are quite knowledgeable iin different areas of gar.
E_Americanus is one of the best!!!
the other got permently banned(he had a heck of a temper):irked:

stay around!!! :D

If it comes down to that just ditch the oscar. The Gar is WAY better and much more fun then some basic oscar anyways. Once you've had your Gar for a while you will learn that there is really no other fish that matter besides Gar.
Well... maybe a stingray or 2 :headbang2

You really really love gar !

i do agree get rid of the Oscar hehehehe:chillpill:

Thanks for all the feed back. I plan on being a gar keeper for a long time. I love primative fish, and always have, hence my signature. I'm a member on a lot of sites and rarley do I post because every body else takes care of it. I have just seen a lot of ppl who say that Oscars r fine and then u have he 1's that say they r terriable rank mates.
I know that gar lovers r very defensive and I can appreciate that, (Defense=passion), and I've watched this sub-forum for a long time, well since dec of 08. lol
So think I will seperate the oscar and just leave the Florida, Blk Aro, Ornate x 2, and Kitty.
Couple more questions though, Do u guy's think that the Electric blue would be ok, or just stick wth what I mentioned above.
If I transfer the out the O, do U hink an 17" blk Aro (super mellow) wld take out my florida? Florida only being 7" and all? Maybe that's a stupid question but my Aro has never shown any sign's of agression to other fish that R smaller than him.
Thanks again, and be patient, I plan on sticking around a long time.

Gar Keeper.....U crack me up on how much U love Gars. Almost every post I've read wth your name in it sys get rid of everything else and just keep Gars.....love it.;)

arros are a touchy tank mate as well. some people never have an issue then some do.
remember gars LOVE silvery fish. they cant resist taking a bit. most gar will not try to take some they think they cant eat but mine does all the time.
i would be willing to try those but watch it close and be ready to seperate.
what electric blue?? if its a cichlid or a cray no!! crays are oppertunistic and cichlids of all times can be way too aggressive. watch the kitty too. some cats are good some not. depends on the mouth and action level of the kitty.

AND i mean this in a.... "nice" way..... gar keeper can get a little too hyper on an issue.

I was looking at your tanks on your profile page(awesome). I noticed that U had no Cichlids at all, But poly's which I've heard r ideal tank mates for gar. I also saw in 1 of your tanks a African Aro. I thought that these weren't compatiable with gars? Thats kind of why I thought it would be ok(maybe) depending on the exact personality of the fish, But just maybe my Oscar would get along with my Florida, as soon as I grow him out a little bit in that 60 I have to reseal....LMK, thanks. Just trying to learn how to do it the rght way. I really dont want to have to get rid of my Gar, or my Oscar.

african arowanas are actually one of the better tankmates for gar, other aros usually aren't as good. jars are probably the worst, silver and blacks are usually hit and miss. but when they do work, it doesn't do any good for the gar. oscars are just too aggressive. i've tried this combo(i too have done some stupid combos:() but thankfully had the sense to remove the oscar after a day. sometimes you see the combo working, but again this is either in ponds, where the large space diffuses aggression, or the owner doesn't care about the gars well being, and as long as it's alive s/he'd gladly say they're compatible. lepisoteids and cichlid combos are just not beneficial, and shouldn't be tired.

actually, my gars respond when they're hungry, but that's about it. gars(im not sure if this applies to oscars) do not have the cognitive ability to feel love, compassion or any sort of attatchment. so while they're awesome and responsive when they're hungry/feeding time, they usually just lie around most of the time:grinno:

what are the dimentions of the 60gal? it would be fine for a while, but i wouldn't keep it longterm in anything less than a 120gal wide. oscar combos are a no-go.

gar keepers gar is probably just looking for mashed potato to go with the chicken, i doubt it's because the gar likes him:raspberry

aros could work if they were roughly the same size, though i personally wouldn't do it. the only aro combis i'd try is african arowana, and perhaps in the near future an asian aro mix, i'd let everyone know how aggression/territorial disputes work:P

cichlids are a no-go, period.

cats may work, but they do not do any good for the gar and pose a constant threat(eating the gar/spooking it into breaking it's back). i'd miss that combo if i were you.
