Hi Gar forum members. was here quite a while ago, about 6 months to be close, still exploring tank options and such.

What gars would be good for an 8x3x2.5 tank? and what tankmates go well with them? ive seen that they veture through the entire tank strata, but would like to know some tankmate options. thanks

almost all sp of gar would be fine. check the stickies for their average max captive sizes
 
Anything but a gator.

For tankmates, bichirs are generally a good choice. And other gars. You generally want to avoid aggressive fish like cichlids, fish small enough for the gar to eat (obvious), and silver colored fish like tbarbs, silver dollars, bala sharks etc as gar are attracted to the silver color and may go after them.

even longnose? id like to get some of those. how many spotteds?
 
i have bichirs with my gars they go along fine

one time my gar snapped a carp and the bichir snapped the same carp they split the poor thing into 2 LMAO
 
any species but gator could live in there for quite some time (life in cases of some species). for tankmates go with bichirs, African bonytongue, SALungfish/AULungfish.--
