Gar Quiz - the return - ID the fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my take on the current quiz is a florida gar/platyrinchus. atractosteus species are immediately ruled out on the lepisosteus-like head, and longnose is another obvious species to be ruled out. im eliminating shortnose due to the patterning and small pelvic fins. finally decided on florida due to the stocky body and short snout.

ok just to clarify, this is your answer for both photographs? keep note this is not the same exact fish in both photos --

Top-Florida
Bottom-Spotted

I feel like this seems the most obvious answer, but then these quizzes tend to be tricky so I am inclined to think on it a bit before going with 1 - florida, 2 - spotted.

1, Florida.
2, Spotted (high green coloring points me towards spotted over florida. This is from observing my own spotted vs. florida gars).

ok xander gave some morphological differences in his guess, for other (even if you have already answered) what morphological differences are you basing your answers on. let's set aside pattern for a moment as we all know this can be quite variable; i know the lighting is different in both pics, but rest assured they are both good representations of the respective fish.--
