gar with a bump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
he took a turn for the worst. he was swimming fine til i woke up tonight and saw him belly up. i took a look inside of him and the bump was yellow inside. what do you think it was?

Sorry to here that man. was it pus?

it was a hard yellow ball. was round and was in the muscle. ganoid scales are tough tho.

I guess some sort of malignant growth or tumor that began affecting its system over time...

sorry about your loss... i've ran into this before and lost a couple gar. Always around this size. Immediate treatment of Melafex cures the problem if you catch it the day it happens. I had 2 8'' gators that came in with this, one spread to an eyeball (terrible to see lol) and my other battled growths on its side exactly like yours. After treatment the eye growth gar lasted for about 2 months and my other gator is now 14'' and healthy as could be.

sorry to hear about this fish. it is definitely an unusual situation and it would have been good to get pics for documentation of the internal issues. it is hard to say what the problem is from the description and earlier pics.

it would have been some internal damage from the drop, and then it built up over time, however, it could also be fatty deposits building up as they so often do in captive gars. furthermore, it could be a tumor or secondary infection from parasites. it is difficult to say.

my initial thoughts are that this problem likely could not have been treated, and that you did the best you could...clean water, calm environment, etc. i doubt melafix would have fixed a major internal problem like this, and we seldom recommend its use with gars.

hopefully you can pick up a replacement in the near future. sorry for the loss, and best of luck with a new gar--
