Due to circumstances a bit beyond my control (this is a tank in the science lab at the school where I work). I now have 2 large cichlids - 6" Jack Dempsey, 9" Midas - with my 11" Florida Gar.

Any chance of these fish peacefully coexisting?

I will seperate them if they don't get along, but I'm wondering if I should even bother trying.

The dempsey might work Craig but the midas may be a problem especially if its a male. As you know I've had large cichlids with my previous gars without a problem but the difference is tank size. Keep your eye on them.

Agreed, the midas would concern me.

Thanks for the replies.

Yea - tank size is a wee bit different.

I think the Midas is a female. The 2 cichlids are going after each other a bit. The gar just sits in his usual spot behind a large rock. I nudged him (he lets me pet him) out from behind the rock and the cichlids didn't pay him any mind, so we'll see.

If the midas doesn't play nice, maybe I'll put her in the piranha tank!

Well, the Jack Dempsey does not like the Midas. The Midas gets bit over and over and does nothing. I think the Midas may be a mellow fellow.

Neither care about the gar though. The Dempsey hangs out with it behind the rock.

Anybody want some big cichlids?

I've never had issues keeping my Florida Gar with large cichlids even though thats not normally the case. I have mine with a male JD and Oscar and they pay no attention to him. It's kind of a hit or miss thing. The only issue is that when gars get picked on they don't fight back.

i had my gar with two large oascars for a long time and a large male convict, keep everyone well fed!

generally advised against
