Anyone tried it or thought of it? I figure it'll be a whole lot easier then buying 55g drums, easily replaceable, and a whole lot cheaper.

If i remember right i might have seen something similar used for some outdoor ponds. I think it was big garbage cans .

There have been countless people with this idea, but throw out the extra $10 a piece on drums because the garbage cans will begin to warp the second water goes in them. Some garbage cans today even have an anti-mold agent in the plastic. Overall, not a good idea. I see no problem in using garbage cans if it is an outdoor pond and they will be buried...

actually ive been using a garbage can for more then 2months now about a month before i setup my pond i was cyclin it and its gfilled with 600 bioballz and has 1100lph and cost me in total(excluding free pump) 85 dolars aussie the can cost me 10 dollars aussie

I'll be using 55g drums for my filter on my pond. When we finish the basement and I build my monster tank I will use 55g drums for the filters.

The build isn't really a build as much as it is an assembly.

1. Toss in the pump.
2. Fill it with media.
3. Add drip tray or spray bar.

I used a spray bar of sorts. It was spiral of hose with holes drilled in it. It sat directly on the media. I added filter floss (Poly-Fill) on top of the media for mechanical filtration.

You want to use a round trash can so that it does not distort. Also, if you can find one with a slightly domed lid, you may be able to use it for a drip tray. Just drill holes in it and turn it upside down.

I have used a garbage can for a pond filter and I thought about using one on my 200 gal tank because the pond filter was working so well. Then disaster, the garbage can split and dumped water every where, of course the pump kept running and emptied the pond to about 3". I would find a 55 gallon drum that was made to hold liquid. I have a 55 gal. drum that was used to hold Pepsi syrup. Check Craig's list, in my area there is a guy selling safe 55 gal drums for $17.
