So i came home tonight and notice a fish tank 2 house down from mine outside in the garbage. i went and check it out and theres was a 55-60g tank, stand, heater, lid , light, sump/overflow type filter built into the stand, and some other random stuff. "CRAZY" theres lots of salt like substance in the tank so im pretty sure it was a saltwater tank. im planing to clean it up and take some pics soo u guys can help me make use of this tank. i wanna make a saltwater tank since i already have 2 fresh but ive never have and have no idea how to set it up or work.. the filter will be the main problem since ive never used that type of filter before. any input will be great. thanks in advance for helping out.. thanks..

its all good.. im jus happy it was free lol.. i mite jus use it for fresh if its too much work for salt. dont know untill i clean it and make sure everything works and no leak.

MAN! My friend out in Bloomfield NJ called me telling me that one of his friends was going to give him a old 55 gallon saltwater setup. His friend put the tank outside since he had to go to work and my friend was only a short drive away. His friend said he would put it in front next to the garbage and somebody came by and stole it before he could get to it!!! Just kidding. Grats on the find!:)

What a great pick up. I recently broke down my reef tank because it was to much work, and plan to turn my 75g back into freshwater. I will say that saltwater equipment can usually be sold for a good price especially since you didn't have to pay anything for it!

^agreed ! is the tank drilled for a over flow ? what kind of lighting is on it? and is everything that was with it work? just a few things to check. after that and if everything checks out is is pretty ez to set one up. first git yourself a hydrometer (test lvls of salt in the tank) some new substrate(dont yous old you never know what is in it and the dead bacteria can and will kill anything you put in the tank) and some salt mix. mix saltwater to 1.020. make shour salt is dissolved before putting it in the tank. i like to yous a garbage can and a power head to mix the salt just ezer. put water in the tank and git your filters running because it the is going to take extra water make shour you mix extra. better to have to much then no enuf ( within reason)once the tank is running and all the salt lvls are right start adding in the substrate remember to take water out so you dont flood you house lol been there dont want to do it again . yes the water will get cloudy as hell but that will clear up after a day or two sometimes alot faster depending on the substrate. after the cloudiness has gone away check salt lvles again 1.021-1.024 is the best to keep it at. let it run first add live rock what a few day and start adding fish. ONE AT A TIME!!!!!!!! you need to get you bio filters going so add a cheep fish and check your lvles after a few day of feeding and pooping. rinse and repeat lol until it starts to cycle . you will love it but remember it is referred to the dark side for a reason lol no more looking at 4 dollar fish lol 40-70$ is average on a fish. but nothing like it. good luck and hope it helps any more questions just ask . you can speed up the prosses of cycling by yousing live sand. and never yous crushed coral yes it is cheep as hell but it is a ticking time bomb whiting to happen. always yous a sand base

p.s. dont let anyone tell you it is to much work to take car of it is no different then fresh and sometimes ezer. it is just the anishel investment that scares people fish only tank are so ez to maintain clean glass water change every month or two. reef can be a little more complicated but not hard at all lots of reserch :) :) :)
