garden hoses and filling your tank

I figured it out the rubber hoses are coted inside with an anti mildew treatment my wife also posted this on Alberta aqutica and some there mentioned this I guess I should have run about 20 or so gallons of straight hot water through the hose first not cold water that would have probably washed out the poweder. Everything is working fine now Ishould have know better I hope others can learn from my mistake and make sure all the water goes down the drain and not into a tank I think the warm fish tank temp water loosened the coating off the hose thanks everybody for the help and advice.

You never answered the question about de-chlorinating the water!!! I had been out the the hobby for almost 20 years and when I got back into it, I did the exact same thing. I failed to de-chlorinate and experienced exactly what you have described.

My hose was "not" brand new at the time, so, the conditions are not 100% the same, however, the end-point was. New hose or not, if you don't de-chlorinate the water, you will almost certainly experience recurrences off sporadic die-off.

What are the exact brands / models of the hoses that caused problems?

For years I've used garden hoses to fill tanks (without incident). A story like this causes panic and paranoia about ALL hoses when it seems that only a very few hoses cause problems...

I think hes just stating that some NEW hoses cause this problem, it also sounds like just running water through them for a little while will solve the problem no matter the hose.

I have been using the same hose for several years. I use it to vacuum the tank and then I flush the debris out and add the water. We have a well so their is no need to add anything to the water. I use the same procedure on all the tanks, 150, 55 & 30.
I do weekly 50% water changes and have not had any problems. I clean the canister filters out every 2 months.

I know they do make safe for drinking hoses, I've seen them at Home Depot. I think they called them water potable. I'd say use a hose that has no harmful chemicals in it.
