So I was just doing my merry ol thing and watching YouTube videos and for some reason I was watching an African cichlid video, and the guy was saying he feeds his fish garlic to boost their immune system. Fair enough makes sense it is a great anti- fungal, parasitic, biotic etc. so I did a google search and found this:

A few guys post results from studies, one being that the scientists feed the fish high amounts of garlic for over a week, at 2 grams per kilogram of body weight, so .2% body weight in garlic. They found that it can lead to fatty liver disease and the fish might not absorb the energy in food as well. Another post cites another study and says that in moderation it's great and the reef guys use it to rid their fish of nematodes. So my thinking is this should easily transfer to freshwater fish. If it can cure internal parasites, why not use it? Evidently NLS puts garlic in their food. So my questions: is it safe? Has any one on MFK tried this? And does any one have any long term effects if used? I'm dying to know

I use it. I use it for the reasons you posted but it is also to help get finicky eaters to eat. But I use it sparingly not everyday.

This. Ideal for finnicky eaters

Health is the only long term effect. if you stuff any living organism with too much of one thing its going to get sick. But in measured amounts, garlic is king.

yea moderation is key lol

?
k not everyday i got that lol whats your regime with it? how often and how much? do u just insert the garlic into tilapia for example?

Maybe about once a week I let some food soak with the garlic. I use it mostly as an appetite stimulant (even though the fish don't need it) and the health benefits. If I got a finicky eater I will use it when trying different foods until the fish starts to eat.

100% agree.. like anything else.. too much of a good thing is bad.. But I used it alot in getting new finicky eaters to eat at work as it's cheap and effective.. i've used it in conjunction with prazi a few times as well, if it actually did anything or not I can't say but imo it helped clear out the IPs. It's in the pellets i feed my fish so they get enough i don't keep it around.. but I usually have garlic in the kitchen anyway if i ever did need it.

You can really smell the garlic in NLS thera+a pellets. I am an odd one that likes the smell but my wife hates it. I don't know that it's garlic that does it, but my fish just look MUCH better since I added NLS to the feeding regimen. I know its been said a million times, but it was a pretty clear difference. Maybe a week or two later I found myself suddenly shocked at how amazing all my fish looked.. heheh
