Males have a longer tail and the vent protrudes beyond the shell edge further than the female...it's been done, but it's very rare.

i have two gars and one aro and a frt ..the frt hides in the half bucket .. but i've seen the frt nip at the gar once thats all

in general, gars and turtles are not a good combo...and in most cases FRT's will nip at the gars just as badly as the next turtle species. if you value the gars not looking hideously chewed up over time, then skip the combo. can't speak to the multiple FRT's combo though, so i would trust what others with experience have stated already--

I keep 2 with 10"+ shells together in a 240 but they have to be fed tons otherwise the female punks the male. When they are full of food there is no aggression at all.

imo, fishes dont mix well with turtles... gars look better if they have nice healthy fins
