generally agree...with the addition that turtles and gars are never really a good combination. turtles will in most cases chew up gars fins/tails...has happened countless times with FRTs and other aquatic/semi-aquatic turtles. the Croc III gars at Shedd Aquarium are another good example of this...and last i had seen they were STILL together with a bunch of map turtles!--

Huh, I didn't know that all turtles were that bad with gars; I thought that some species were fine with them because of their behavior/feeding habits e.g. mata mata.

On a side note, as for those Crocs IIIs at the Shedd, my sister was just there this past weekend while on a band/choir trip to Chicago. She sent me a picture of the gars, and, as a joke, I texted her back, "Think you can fit one in your suitcase?" :grinno:

yeah turtles and gars are a bad combo in general...ranks among the worst of the gar combos really. and a mata mata can still put a decent amount of hurt on a gar...just because they vacuum feed doesn't mean their beaks can't do some damage. even "vegetarian" FRTs have attacked golden gars...this happened many years ago, and coincidentally happened again with Madding's fish. the map's at shedd keep after the croc III's (you can see the tail damage in the photos i have on primitivefishes.com), and we've had plenty of reports/accounts of red-ear sliders and painteds acting similarly. i have kept softshells with sunfishes when they are of similar size, but would never recommend keeping one with gars--

ok pleco is gone lol morrow anyway and ill give it a try and see how the combo works cause this softhell doesnt have a hard mouth and he hasnt attacked the tsn oscar etc but if he does the sst is gone xp

um, did you have its beak removed?

:frog:

I'de rather get bit by a snapper then a softshell.... softshells are also more prone to being fish food themselves. Wiggles pretty much pointed out some very good info, and as always Sol.

Being as your refering to the false spotted gar as well. a fish that maxes in the 12" range. your talking fish even less "tough" as a true gar. so the advise is even better placed. false gars are also generally schooling fish and part of the tetra family. You will likeing find more info in the "other charachin" forum on them, but I doubt the advise will honestly be much different.
