Canada may be tricky as well, i know that in Ontario spotted gars are endangered and illegal to possess. that maybe the only species of issue for the whole country, but it warrants further research when possible.--

I've kinda looked into this the legislature would suggest that if they originate outside of Ontario it falls outside of being illegal to possess. But at the same time customs won't give a clear answer.

One thing that seems to support this is that many of the florida gars are imported as spotted gars.

Okay, I'll fix that then and make it a "Some gars are legal to own" rather than "All gars are legal to own."

there is likely some grey area to this for sure, but i do know for a fact that some researchers (who i have also worked with in the past) have been called in to check "spotted" gars at LFS, etc...if they indeed find that they are SPG and not FLG (and this can be determined by examination), the fish are confiscated...not sure on the fines though.

other than the info i have through direct contact and/or university over there i am not sure on the details. all that being said, i would be very wary of keeping SPGs in Ontario, and uncertain in the rest of the country. kind of like it's likely illegal to own a California condor in CA even if it was somehow bred in Nevada (although that's clearly a drastic example :)) --
