Hey i posted this thread in General but i didnt get much response so here it is :)
Will gars mind being in a barebottom tank on an iron stand? The hole underneath the tank leads me to believe that they might have a hard time picking food up off the floor, if they cant see the bottom glass. Am i just trippin? :screwy:

*My previous thread didnt pertain specifically to Gars. Thats another reason why I am re-posting.

i dont think there is a problem

My gar when they move the sand and get it bare, will often get freaked out by the mirror effect. they try to bite it and get scared if food lands near it. I personnaly suggest BB with gar but i suppose if ur gar was used to it than it should be fine, but i dunno. Just doesnt seem too good for the fish. They will def be more comfortable with cover

i don't know if they would mind or not, but you could easily paint the outside bottom of the tank.

i did this for my turtle and axolotl tanks, black bottom looks pretty good!

any time i had fish or something in a clear bottom tank, they seemed to act weird and a little skittish. i can't really describe it, but when i painted the bottoms or added substrate, they started acting more natural.

if it was my tank, i would definitely paint the bottom.

The only problems are i dont want to remove my fish and stress them for really no reason, and my tank is already on the stand so i wouldnt be able to paint the whole bottom

To Lep- I dont know if my tank will make the mirror effect, since the stand is open on the top.

Is your stand open on the top?

why? isn't the stand open under the tank?

Yeah it is, but i dont know how i would paint it. Wouldnt it drip?

And the stand itself will block part of the bottom of the tank.

spray paint, use cardboard to shield the overspray.

or just be careful, take your time and brush on thin layers.

In my experience, your gar will get use to the bb tank after a while, I guess if they are use to feeding off the bottom then it might freak them out. I have my gars in both bb and with gravel. You can always hand feed your gar then you won't need to worry about the food on the bottom thing. The only thing I can see wrong with a bb tank and an open stand is if there is something good to eat crawling around in your stand and your gar see it through the bb. The mirror effect is from you looking through two panes of glass through water that aren't parallel.
