just get under there and paint it. throw some new york times (only use for it) on the floor to catch any drip, i think they'd be much happier. i did it

I've had shortnose and spotted gar in a barebottom 55g on a metal stand. They didn't seem to be bothered by being able to see through the bottom, or seeing a reflection. They also didn't seem to have any problems picking food up off the bottom.

Mine are all on black sand now, I think tanks with substrate look much better...
