Gars incoming! A few questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big are they now? Was there ever a moment when they almost broke their backs?

Like 10 inches or so, no there wasn't any indication of a broken back or injury. I had a tropical gar in a 120 a couple years ago which broke its back but it recovered perfectly, overnight also.

more like they were put in small tank after they break their back in a big tank.
And if the gar get scared in a big tank, you can start seeing them swimming around and hit their nose into the glass. Even my larger gar do that sometime, but they are big and strong enough to withstand the impact.
I've always found gar to be very docile and not easily spooked. Interesting to hear your viewpoint I hadn't heard anyone repeat that in awhile.

it is not a view point since it happened a lot. Young gars can be scared very easy, but it is not hard to keep them calm by not keeping them with bad tankmates. And people shouldn't be having that problem anymore if they do their research properly because we are not like 10 years ago when there is little information on how to keep a gar that you can find.

BTW to answer your question earlier about have I ever had a broken back gar for when I keep it in a too big of a tank when it is small. I have never try to kill my fish before.

Well, the debate can rest for now--they came in at 10" and 11.5". I'll make a thread with pics~

at that size they will be good to go straight to the big tank as long as there is no aggressive tank mate. Good luck with them man, you will enjoy keeping them.

Yeah, I'm loving them! The clown loaches are getting a little too friendly, running back and forth along their length and nipping, but the gar don't seem to care. All the polys are interested, but playing nice. I have one ornate that has been aggressive with other Poly's in the past, but he doesn't seem to mind their presence whatsoever.
