I have 2 Florida Gars 6-7",i got rid of all my catfish except 2 3-4" channel cats.Do you guys think this combo will work out all right??Thanks.:headbang2

cats are, for the most part, too boisterous and greedy to be considered good gar mates. you might not see too much aggression, but you might end up with a skittish underfed gar. also increases the risk of the gar getting a broken back from freaking out and ramming into the tank walls

Sounds like a great combo to me! I have a 5 inch florida gar with my RTC x TSN and Senegal bichir.

the rtcxtsn's actually a pretty bad tankmate for the florida..for the same reasons. it'll also likely outgrow the gar(mass wise at least) and might attempt to eat the gar.

At my LFS they have catfish and gars in same tank and they seem to get along

at lfs fish are packed into small poorly conditioned tanks and are do not behave as they would in proper tanks.

yup gars on top cats on bottom good combo for me

just like how gars on top plecos on bottom is a good combo huh. btw gars are not "top water" fish.

Lets also not forget that if the catfish is small enough and the gar wants to investigate to see if it could be a possible meal the spines on the cat can get it stuck in the gars mouth then you have problems. Any catfish's natural response to being attacked is to flare out its fins making its spines a painful deterant to aggressors.

sorry i was supposed to type bichir because thats what i have
was at work and didnt know what i was typing  my bad
yeah no plecos with gar

I think it would work with the right cat...problem is most of the common aquarium cats are either too small, and the gar may eat it or try to eat it and be injured by the spines...or too big like RTC, TSN, and hybrids of these. I'm considering trying with a lima cat, if I can find one in the right size range; they seem very hard to find around here.

Also I'm sure things like raphael cats which are peaceful and 100% nocturnal would be fine. I would have said Syno. eupterus too, but I've been getting varying reports on them being slimecoat eaters. I know some Synodontis are but was under the impression that eupterus weren't one of them.
