Gars with Catfish??..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
some cats will be too active and spook the gar. if its a big tank maybe its not as big of a deal. i have a lima in with my gar. the lima is about half of the size and not at all an aggressive feeder. he hides behind the filter intake and only comes out to grab food on the bottom. my gar only eats floating foods as well so it works out.

t will be alright. Right now I am keeping my 2' Gator gar with my 1' 6'' TSN and a 1' 5'' Marbled Cat and a 10'' Oscar (temporarily) but when the gar grows to 5' I will move it to my pond

Gars and channels share the same waters in the wild so as long as you you have the space and structures they need I don't think you will have any probems. Keep in mind that channels can get 40+ pounds. If i was going to keep any catfish with a florida gar it would have to be either a brown or yellow bullhead. The yellows rarely are found over 3 pounds and the browns are about a pound larger than yellows as adults. Bullheads share the same water as gar too but require much less space.

no cats with gar. cats are greedy and active. gars are no were near as active. everything else has been said. Lima is the only cat ive ever heard of not being a bad tank mate. NO RTC!!!!!. i shouldnt even have to explain why this is bad but here it goes.

a gar -----------------------------------------------

a rtc the same length---------------------------------

the gar unless subbstationaly larger than hte cat is gonna get eaten. then that will cause al kinda of problems with the gar trying to eat the cat. i have seen it but those were huge gar and huge cats. think of the size of a catfish mouth

My friend has a featherfin synodontis in with her gar, it goes through bad spouts of slime coat eating. :( This is only stopped temporarily by over feeding the catfish. Luckily the gar will be moving to a better home, an AZA zoo!
