Garter snakes are mildly venomous

I dont think that the fact that the snake might be venomous has anything to do with whether or not people will kill it. My little brother and I used to catch garters all the time when we were little and you will not believe the number of people who thought they were dangerous just cuz they were a snake.
I even had someone try to tell me that one was a baby rattler who just hadnt grown his rattler yet. Come on a rattler in Seattle seriously?
Your "average idiot" as you put it is more likely to say snake=viscous killer.
Thats just my experience/opinion though.
 
yea, but the knowledge that they're venomous(even if they're harmless) is going to fuel more of the "its dangerous" chain of thought and a lot more people are going to be killing them "just to be safe"
 
Huuh really when i was really little like 6-9 i would go on garter snake hunts ( not killing them really just going out and filling a bucket with them ) and i got bit count less times and it drew blood many many times and a couple of time i even let one try to swollow my finger because i thought it was funny but getting my finger out of its mouth was painful and stressful to the snake so i stoped doing it but never had any problems if the venom is due to bacteria then that might explane things because i would all ways was my hands like cray after words because they crap on you and it smells terrible
 
lol, i agree, ppl may want to kill them if they here this, so just to be safe, i wouldnt just tell anyone, ive dealt with much ignorance, and changed some views before

ive been catching snakes and other reptiles since i was about 10, and ive never reacted to anything, (lol, ive caught 12 or more snapping turtles in my life and never bin bitten)
venomous just teaches me to respect an animal that much more, and to be carefully when im trying to photo it, but surprisingly ive only seen 3 live venomous snakes in my life, out of the TMTC ive seen
 
People need so much to be educated and to learn civism lessons:(
 
ditto, i dont feel where all there yet lol, this planet is in serious trouble and not
enuf ppl care, everyone shud do "something" to help
