Garter snakes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wait for somebody else to come, but I'll tell you they move around A LOT, and don't grow big. Maybe 2 feet or so.

Real easy. Same basic care for most snakes, although they're semi-aquatic in nature, so they require a large water container. This is what they'll often eat and defecate in. Their temps could be slightly less, too; probably average of 75'F with a hot spot of 85'-90'F. They will eat frogs, toads, fish, earthworms, and mice.

Most are very highstrung at first, but many can tame down with regular interaction.

Thanks bud!

hey bruce, Garter snakes dont grow very big and are not very social. captive bred or captive raised garters might be more social. garters like to bask, and they mostly eat crickets, worms, spiders, and other insects altho when they get bigger I'm sure they will eat pinkies. If you are serious about getting one, dont worry, I'm sure you will have alot of help and advice here on MFK.

they eat guppies and goldfish too. but feeder goldfish can be bad for them.

I've kept them from time to time over the years. I fed mine earthworms, slugs, snails, small toads & frogs, and fathead minnows. I never had any luck when I offered them insects. Oh, and they realy LOVE big juicy nightcrawlers.

I haven't kept a garter snake since I was a little kid. From what I remember they get excited easy, and will squirt stinky doo-doo on you when they get scared. They will eat crickets, grasshoppers, and earthworms no problem. They do swim some and a dish would be helpful.

I have seen them at about 2.5-3' but that was super rare. The average size snake was always about a foot. They will tolerate room temp with a heatlamp or heatrock to warm them up.

When I was a kid, I built a tree house at the back of my parents land. It fell down and landed on a big tree stump. A couple months later I went out there to try and salvage some wood and found a giant ball of garter snakes mating. They used to be there every year at the same time in a big she-male ball. Some developers built a subdivision at the end of my parents land and the ball hasn't been seen since. It would have been an awesome site to show my kids.
