one of my charax has his gill ripped. i don't know how it happened, and at this point i don't care because it already happened. im moving all my headstanders into a 55 today.

all i want to know is if its possible for this guy to pull through... and what should i do??

have anyone else had their payara etc gills ripped this badly? he swims and acts just fine for now but i woke up to him looking like this... can he recover? or am i just watching an inevitable death... i payed 20$ a piece for these just this past friday!!! DAMNIT!

i used melafix cause its all i have... this just sucks.

These little guys are tough. Mine has survived 2 shankings from a Tat and healed up just fine both times. Both times he had 2 puncture wounds that went all the way thru his body.

And that kind of wound would have killed any payara that I have ever owned.

All I did was kept the water warm (80-82degree's) and clean. No ammonia or nitrite. And did a few extra water changes and he pulled thru just fine.

If you start to see signs of infection you should put him in a hospital tank and add a good antibiotic. Such as maracyn 1 and 2 together as well as a antifungal med.

I love these little guys. I wish they would come around more often.

If he pulls through, I don't the gill plate will grow back...
sorry, hope he makes it.

thanks hybrid and huang. i was thinking to myself "well if its like a piranha it will survive like a roach... but if its like a payara it will keel over any second... tomorrow"

its alive today, some of the ripped gill rotted/fell off but its still hanging with some chin and gill plate left.. his eye on the wounded side is also slightly clouded now.

from a straight and rear angle you can easily see into his gills...

these guys act like exodons kinda, they dash and chicken scrap each other periodically... i never expected that from the pictures. and whats weird is the wounded one has plenty of fight in him and often chases the other healthy ones around.

UPdate?

I would love to add more of these someday to my lonely one. He is stuck trying to school with scombs. LOL
