Gash on my charax!! gill plate to chin ripped. HELP

ok so like i said earlier dose the thirty with melafix if you got it if not i would suggest getting some

i have no clue i woke up and found it like that.

they are all still alive. how high should i keep the temp? without the heater, hawaii water is around like 80 flat (indoors) right?

actually... no :eek:.

i found a rotting piece of his gill on my rock decoration... looks like it dashed through the smaller hole and really seriously crashed on the sharp piece.

now my main problem... i can't get him to eat good enough. he acts all fine but hes being one of those irritating fish that go after feeders, have them up in a corner and within biting distance... and then he just swims away after taking 2 or 3 very crappy bitting attempts.. the other 4 fish are snatching food left and right but hes not getting crap even when its in his grasp.

thing is he hasen't had much of anything to eat since i got him... and now with the gash hes not trying as hard to catch any feeders. (cant figure out what else to give them that moves but slower... they ignore everything. even crickets)
 
update: i put like 30 guppy fingerlings in his hospital tank and hes still scarcely eating (idno if hes eating at all). hes still chasing around fish half-assed and doesn't even catch them when they are right infront of his nose, he just opens his mouth like hes gonna eat it but retardedly shadow-bites it and it swims away when the oppertunity comes..

i can't figure out what would be a slower live-prey that he can actually catch!! help pls.. i dont want him to starve to death over a wound thats been healing well...
 
bump: he is alive. and well... but i haven't personally seen him eat. he is back with the shoal in a 55gal.
 
Well I can tell you one thing. Once it falls off, its not gonna grow back. I HAD an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey with the same injury. Chances are he will heal. But he will have a harder time breathing than the other fish. If anything under the gill plate gets ripped off it dosnt grow back. The chin of ur fish is connected to the gill covers which is that thin accordian-like skin under the gill plate. Best bet is to keep this fish away from the others until he heals. Its not good to have him swimming around with a target on his head.
