GATF growth rate??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you want it to grow fast i would suggest mix in some live food and shrimps... 100% food stick will not make it grow fast...

fast -----------------> slow
live food -> shrimps -> pellets

also water more water change...
I can't agree more...

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. I think food sticks are more nutritionally balanced and have vitamins and trace elements that live food may not have. Besides the risk of parasites which one of my GATF did acquire and eventually die of.
The problem is you "think," and he knows for the fact..

That's fine if you have the short term viewpoint. Grow them out fast then suddenly die for no reason, catch a parasite that you have no idea where it came from and die. Or do it safe and slightly slower. The problem with ATF's is that once they're used to live they will die before they eat non live anymore. Ask me how I know.

I put them in lots of current and I've had good experience. From 4-8 inches in about 8 months. I've also noticed a growth plateau or deceleration around the 7-8" mark.

Any thoughts to using a powerhead or circulation fan to create a strong water current for fish and maybe make him work harder to swim for growth and possible more appetite, almost like it's natural enviroment. Yes, No! I have been think about experimenting with this process to see if it help any.
Plus I think its an individual fish issues IMO, becasue I had two GATF purchased in May in a 55 gallon, both were power fed minnows all the time, kept the tank full of minnows. One grew from 4'' to 7'' in about 3 1/2 months it seemed, unfortuanly I moved him in with a 9in Tig, so he would not killed the slower growing GAFT, but the Tig disposed of him one night I left the light off on the aquarium, this was in August. The one I still have is only maybe 6'' now in a 75 gallon by himself, but it has been all of 8months. I am giving him until the end of the summer to make it to the big tank, if he is not at least 9-10 inches, I am giving up! :irked:

My tank has one power head and one wavemaker.and those big gatf in Taiwan and Japan are only fed live

So far I've fed mine well quarantined feeders and frozen blood worms and he seems to be putting on weight and growing a little longer. He's in a 30 gallon with Giant Danios and gutloaded guppy fry with no current but lots of Dissolved oxygen from the 2 bubble walls that i have hookedup on that tank.
