I, like most other people pretty much fell in love with these guys as soon as I saw them. The episode of River Monsters and the special on Nat Geo only reinforced that love for them and I'm at a point now debating on whether or not to buy one.
From the threads it comes across as these guys are skittish, so I'm thinking of putting it in my basement where there really won't be anything down there to spook it, and I understand covering the back/sides of the tank is also advisable.
So I'm thinking of starting it out in either a 135g or 180g tank as a growout. Either way it'll be a 6' tank to start in, preferably the 180. As for long term, I was thinking about one of the large tubs you can buy from Tractor Supply Company, they have a 6' x 2' tub that is around 600 gallons I believe, this would be really my only option for when it would outgrow the 180.
So as for tank setup, I'm thinking either something like a FX5 supplemented with powerheads or a couple of AC110's with powerheads would provide ample filtration and a couple of strong powerheads would help create current and well oxygenated water.
As for objects in the tank...just something as simple as a piece of driftwood for hiding or would it be more advisable to add gravel/wood/rocks/plastic plants, I know they're quick so I don't want to clutter the tank up and take away from swimming space but I don't want to stress it due to lack of hiding place.
What kind of growth rate is normal for GATFs? I keep cichla now and they grow like weeds when young, then start to slow, I'm assuming this would be similar? Sorry for the long post, just want to find out as much I can about how to properly take care of them if I do purchase one. Thanks!

best i can do, don't have the $ for a giant tank, nor the space, the doorways in my house are pretty narrow, and I don't think the wife would go for me building a ply tank in the basement

Since you are asking I'll share my opinion. I am a huge advocate of mfking, but there is something about that fish that screams don't put in an aquarium. :) I don't know why, maybe they scare me. Saw some today at the store, even at a couple of inches they look vicious. If you do be careful, its kinda of like playing with a bear trap.

Ha! Funny reply. I think it would be cool. But you wouldnt be able to see it well. They are designed to be a lilo camo from above. Especially when young.

Personally, I think this post sums it up. You could get it and eventually it will due from jumping out or bashing the walls/tank/6X2 tub.

No point of buying a horse if you live in apartment... Know what I mean (jmo).
You could buy him n grow him out till he bashes his face n tells you it's time to go and sell me as a injured fish??

One thing I did with my big VATF when he was young was between water changes I would chase him very slowly w/the opposite end of my 3' net. I figured I needed to scare the fear out of him Lol. I think I did a fairly good job at raising my VATF ... That or I had a rare individual :D

What's funny is I put a post on here b4 asking gatf keepers how big their tank was and I don't think I got any replies so that leads me to believe the vast majority of people keeping them know their tank isn't big enough. They're popping up every where and people are getting them so whose actually got a tank big enough? A stock tank might not be great for viewing but if it can live well in there that's what I'm more interested in than can I see it from the side...

I say if you want it, get it. It cost alot and it will eventually out grow your tank if you can keep it alive til then. Not as much personality as an oscar. If you know all that and still want it, go for it. keep us posted.

Have to agree with west on this one. You rarely see anyone with a big atf, It needs a lot of dedication & special requirements due to it's athletic build. Like a Fw tuna if u ask me.

That's true, which is also the reason why they either end up selling their atfs or end up killing it which in your case seems probable. No one is stopping you if you really want it, so don't use other people who helped & reply to your post to make yourself look better on buying a fish you know you can't properly care for.
