GATF newbie here, debating on purchasing one

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have seen a 3 foot captive specimen, and heard that it recently killed itself by bashing into the walls of a 30-50 tonne pond. so if you think your 6x2 tub is sufficient, i'd think again..

Are the other species of ATF anymore aquarium friendly or are they all doomed to this fate?

I've seen people get away with 12"+ in 150gal+. All atf are doomed when caught, proper care and such will keep it alive. If you manage to get any atf over 10" i'm sure there will be a buyer if you can't upgrade for whatever reason in the future. I'd say search for a Forskuhlii, according to Fugupuff they don't get over 16" in aquaria, 18"+ in the wild.

U cant contain a goliath for its whole life; its a tank buster They will all die a premature death. They are a prehistoric, fast moving, pelagic open water fish. Unless u have one of these 25k gallon tanks or something. But u still run the chance of it dieing from getting spooked. It tears off in the middle of the night slamming into the side of the tank then dies. Just like River Monsters when the goliath ran into the rock head on. It died... I was going to get one last week but passed, Ive owned many many goliaths. But its the same ol thing sooner or later i would have to go to a 300 plus then what after that?

To be honest i hope i see less and less of these in the trade. And you wont find anyone in this hobby who knows more about this fish then me. But over the years ive changed. And i would like to see all the goliath stay there for a full life in the Congo where it belongs. Unless a public aquarium would be willing to house one. Then id support that for sure...

sad but true facts .....

I mean if you really want the fish the bigger the better, You rarely ever see large GATFs with perfect snouts, they bash themselves in anything that is a tiny bit small for there size. I personally (And I'm sure others would agree) would go for a Vittatus in your situation. They are not near as skittish and stay at a more cost and hassle effective size.

what kind of size can i expect from a vittatus? I have read on a couple other threads that vittatus seems a little more aquarium friendly...

PM West1 on that because he is the Vittatus expert on here and has been the most successful keeping one out of anyone I know, But I heard around 3 ft, much more manageable than a Goliath at 5-6 ft. But talk to West1 for sure, I wish I could be more of a help but since I've never been able to keep one since they are illegal here in Florida I do not have the proper expertise and do not want to provide false information just from what I've heard.

As an absolute minimum a 10' by 4' would be required for a G. Even then it's not ideal. I went for VATF in the end and is now pushing 16". I have him in a 8'x3' and am starting to think he needs a bigger tank.

There are plenty of other toothy fish that are much more suitable. A group of Acestrorhynchus cudas, they look a bit like miniature ATF's, would be much more suitable to a 6x2. I would want something I could see through the side though rather than a tub.
