Gatf?

Hydrocynus tanzaniae. No doubt.

If you put a bright light on him, does his adipose fin look dark blue? I am trying to validate my hypothesis that that can be used to identify a tatf from the other species. Large, wild fish have a distinctive blue adipose which is different from the other four species. I'm trying to see if that translates to domesticated fish as well. It certainly does on mine.

When it gets right under the light it does appear blueish

There it is. You have a tatf.

Check out the "Tanzaniae video" link in my signature and go to the second page to see what they look like when big, courtesy of Wes. They're just as boss as a goliath, you're not missing out in any way. Plus, you have something unique that not many people have.

I have seen your post very nice

Cool. :)

Do post more pics of your guy regularly. With you and I documenting the growing up of our tatf, along with Wes lending his considerable weight of opinion to this matter, we could potentially help to get the word out on these things.

My source for conclusively identifying mine was:

Brewster, B (1986) A review of the genus Hydrocynus Cuvier 1819 (Teleostei: Characiformes)
Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology 50(3) : 163-206 (1986)

Hydrocynus tanzaniae is specifically covered on pages 199-201 with its diagnostic keys. I used anal fin ray count and lateral line scale count to identify my fish, along with empirical evidence from the internet; namely the results of fishermen landing tigers in Tanzania where Hydrocynus tanzaniae is the only extant species. Based on all of that, I feel confident that these fish can be confidently called H. tanzaniae.

Will do and also we should send some pics to Fishbase as they do not have any pictures of these fish...i have some redtail cudas Acestrorhynchus nasutus that i Id on there and sent in my pics and now are up there ..so as ours grow we need to send some pics
