Need some help picking out some gear for a planned fishing trip... errr a uhh.. family vacation down to Louisiana this July on Lake St. John and surrounding area. Right now I was thinking of going with the following from Cabelas:

Penn 330GT2/Ugly Stik® Bigwater Combo
Stren® Sonic Braid-300 yds 40# test
Terminator Titanium 24" 15-Strand Leader - 50 lb.
Mustad 3592 Size 6 Kingfish Treble Hook.

I am kinda going off what I read at GASS that they used for Gator Gar but I wasn't sure how old the info was and if there might be better and/or cheaper gear for this. And if anyone lives in the area a fishing buddy/guide would be great!

sounds good but i would have some monofilement backing and circle hooks because you have to wait any ways for them to swallow.

I would use that rod with an Abu Garcia bait cast reel with a clicker on them most the time you can get these reels at your local walmart just make sure you buy one with a clicker. I would never use stren braid its good new but the longer you use the more it likes to wrap around its self. It is by the worst braid because of its tendency to wind lash and thats never a good thing with bait casters. So for line i would go with a 150 yd spool of Power Pro 40 or 50 pound. You should bring a wide variety of weight sizes anywhere from 2-4 oz sinkers either sliding or pyramid. I could keep going on but thats all for now

Most of the stuff I see at walmart wont even carry 100 yds of 40 lb test. And the rod/reel has to be able to put up with something a bit bigger than a 5 lb LMB. we're talking 60-70lbs up to about a 200 lb fish if I'm lucky. This isnt going to be an everyday use rod and reel I'm looking for. I already have my small stream/shore casting gear. This is For the big Mississippi River lunkers. Thanks for the warning on the Braid line though.

Any thoughts on Gamakatsu hooks? I've read they are some of the sharpest hooks out there.

I know what you mean but these reels are built tough ive use them on downrigger rods for 60 + pound flatheads. The main thing you need is a reel with a clicker and this is the best one for the money. You may also need to bring a rod to catch bait ( freashwater drum).

I have 4 other rods I'm bringing with us for the kids who are my bait catchers :D
smart thinking hopefully you get small enough ones here in Mi unless i fish the lake (Michigan) theres only fairly big ones in the river. But with that clicker it just almost like free spooling them but they cant give you back lash. :D

Love gamakatsu hooks perfect for deep sea bottem fishing. The hooks are super strong and always come super sharp out of the package.
