well i dnt actually know.. i was reading abit about this gar n it sed it is preserved n i wanted to see how it held up lol

ooo, ok. depending on how the fish is preserved, they can hold up quite well. fish preserved in alcohol pretty much lose all color and only have faint patterns that remain. i've handled fish collected in the 1850s and preserved in alcohol, it's pretty amazing how well preserved physically fish can be in alcohol.

A fish of that size would have been dry mounted or only parts would have been selected for formalin preservation, Most likely the head only. But as stated there is no reference in any collection to that fish pictured in any collection. Granted it may be out there but there is no link whatsoever to the fish and that photo if it does exist. If there was then as mentioned no question would exist as to the size of the fish and it would be proven as a parlor trick photo a long long long time ago.

so what is the biggest recorded gar?. how long can spicemens last whilst been preserved in alcohol?

well, like i said, a specimen collected in the 1850s is preserved almost perfectly in 75% ethanol. i don't believe there is a set length of time because there's yet to be a fish that has disintegrated in alcohol.

if those are 2x4's the gars no longer than maybe 6 feet. rough estimate though. i doubt any one bothered to preserve the gar, back then they saw it as food. every one remembers goerge pery right? hes the guy who caught the world record lmb. guess what he did with it: filleted it to feed his family. i got money saying the guy in the picture did the same with that gar
