Would it be advisable to keep say a 5" Gator with 3 other 3" bichirs? I've had my Afro die recently and i think it was down to the stress of being kept with the senegalus and was wondering if i got a Gator or two, would they be affected as well? I don't wanna' anymore juve deaths on my hands :/

I see no problem with that, assuming the polys have hiding places.

Gators are topside predators

um do u mean alligator gars? bc i dont think theyll stay 5" very long......

Yes that's pretty much the idea, Gator gar = Alligator gar.

Do gars grow faster than bichirs?

yep! Assuming that they're aptly fed.

sorry, didnt know if you were talking about some other sp.

this is why i asked......

how bigs your tank lol

i wouldn't be so quick to say that Miguel ; depending on the poly, both species of fish could have very different growth rates that might end up jepordising the longevity of the poly. in my experience hiding spots does not work in the long run once a gator gar decides he wants to eat something (yr old rck would know this :P), especially if that something needs to constantly come up for air.

i also wouldn't say that a gator gars hunting is limited to top dwelling prey, for the most part all my gars are opportunistic feeders and will attack and feed from all areas of the tank.

i personally would (1) grow out both fish in seperate tanks till the gators' growth pleatus, between 14-18" and wait till the poly is of a similiar size before mixing them, or (2) just wait till the gators growth stablizes before getting a large poly.

I've decided against the Gator as they're the largest species of gar out there. Probably gonna' end up needing an 8ft tank. Gonna' wait for some shortnose gars to come up for sale before i proceed with buying anything. Thanks c:

Good idea, Shortnose gars are native around here and even though theyre one of the smallest species they are very cool looking IMHO.
