Gator Gar Tankmates?

20 g.. to small my friend. i have a 150 and i think it is to small. i have 2 FL gars, and if they are similar it really will always depend on the size.. if its to big to fit, it will leave your other fish alone.

I agree you will need a bigger tank just as a growout.

yeah but they grow about as fast as a rtc and u would need something like an 8x4x4

probably need a larger tank...not too sure on the growth rate comparison with rtc though, i'm pretty sure they have quite different growth rates
 
Alligator gars usually hit 24" in 1.5 - 2 years then slow down dramatically. They can live for 80+ years and don't become sexually mature until they are 10 or 11 ( so I've heard). An 8x4x4 would be fine for a few years. Once they hit two feet they start putting on muscle and girth and usually only grow like 2-3" per year length wise.
 
Saw some for sale today. Tempted. They seem to have a shorter snout than florida gars and there's just something distinct about them. Is it the eyes?
