Gator Gar Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
niger catfish are about as good tankmates outside of the standard poly/gar/afro suggested combo, good luck with the gators;)

ambush predetor... doesn't matter how fast the dithers are.. eventually it'll eat them. I'de section off an area in the pond that the gars can't get into with some live plants or fakes.. and add guppies or platies or something. Giveing them a spot to "hide" they should reproduce fast enough to add some color. You could also try something like convict cichlids ect. the dumb will get picked off.. and the smarter ones will breed maintaining a colony.

with gator gars its a toss up but eventully they will at least try and eat the other fish. so if you dont mind scared up fish then put em in with other fish

I realize that there is always a risk when housing things with gator gars. The reason that I got the niger catfish is mainly because I saw a picture of a 6'ish gator gar and a huge niger. This being Hal the gar that Peje/Richard used to care for.

As I looking at the pics I'm actually more worried about the heaters. I really have to change out the glass ones and get them out of the open.

i suggested, dont put pleco with gars,(s)he will suck on gars sistem..
i've been success keep alligator gar with much bigger tankmates, whatever species on it.
i'd keep jaguar and oscar with my gars,it work for years..
see at animals planet, that jeremy wades swimming with alligator gars...
in my experience,if you want your gars got more peaceful,,try to give them non live feeds since they are young...

good luck bro/sis,,and
forgive me for the english....

It only take a few minutes to catch a crap-load of Bluegills or other sunfish with rod/reel/worm. Check your local laws for legality of "seigning" for forriage fish and if OK, you can net hundreds of free colorful tankmates/ snacks for you Gator Gar in no time at all.

Please do keep in mind (AS WITH ANY OTHER FISH YOU ADD TO YOUR TANK) always quaranteen thouroughly!

When I had my 2 3 foot gator gars. I successfully kept a 12" oscar and about 6 15" pacu with them. They unfortunately ate my 12" peacock bass which pissed me off.

I've done this in the past. There is a large private pond on my property that is stocked with sunfish, bluegill, bullheads and bass. Gars realy seem to love the sunfish.

My two bigger gars had killed a 12" oscar when they were roughly 24" with their previous owner. So not something I an going to try any time soon. I'm also not that big of a cichlid fan.

That's quite the niger cat, I don't suppose that's one of the ones from Big Als Oakville?
