I'm sure that gators could take out longnose, shortnose, and spotted gars if it wanted to. but would it? if one were 24" (gator) and a fl spotted 12" would they get along or.......?

gars are known cannibals from the get go. so a 12" gar is under no less danger than any other 12" fish when it comes to being tankmates with a 24" alligator gar. i'd definately skip this combo.

In my opinion, this combination is particularly not compatible as the larger gar is the Gator.
Just last night, I saw my 7 inch Gator swallow TWO 3-4 inch Jumbo Shrimp (meant for the Silver Aro and FL Gars).

I have a pair of 6-7" Gators in the same tank as ~12" FL gars and the FL Gars have not shown any hostility to the little monsters. (I don't think the Gator Gars will be as merciful to the FL gars once they grow large enough to eat them.)

Just my 2 cents.

From what I've read, gars are cannibals and the species isn't as important as the size of the individual gars. I'd wager a 24 inch gator is just as likely to kill and eat a 12 inch spotted as a 24 inch spotted is as likely to kill and eat a 12 inch gator.

size is not a problem... i've had small with big gars... they will only hassle but wont kill... as long as they are fed.. they be fine..

not always the case, especially with gator gars being the much larger gar in a mixed-gar scenario. the previous posts comments were correct on this issue--

I am not going to use the following (REAL) picture from one of my tank to suggest a general rule that these fish are compatible tank-mates:

PS: I may have missed the fact that the post above was a joke. :S
