our gator seems to have started a habit of grabbing the 2 ID catfish by the head and shaking them about even though they are too big to eat, but he leaves all the other fish in the tank alone.
is there a reason for this or has the gar just taken a disliking to these 2 fish for some reason?

That is typical gator behavior.. Once they get in their head they want something they try and try then try again...Don't worry as soon as he is done with the ID cats he will move on to another fish....

richard you do have a way with words...a real poet!

either way he is absolutely right. this fish will kill your ID sharks, then work on anything else it feels the need to. A. Spatula typically dont seem to do well with tankmates.

i agree, i think the only thing in these gator gar threads that is repeated more than "they are highly aggressive and will beat up/kill tankmates" is "they get 10 feet, you'll need a bigger tank".

the aggression of gator gars should not be surprising at this point--

lol, its taken three days for the tank divider to come down in my tank... Caught gator full steam ahead afta the three it's i may raise divide after removing the dats, if he goes after anyone else theres a better chance of him being the kebab... But im of 2 the koi store soon, price up them plastic pools...

lol, i know theyre aggressive, just wondered why it was only the ID catfish and not the others he seems to have a problem with

another point that has been brought up several times regarding gar tankmates and potential attacks is silver fish that move around a lot...i believe ID cats fit that MO--
