For your tank water to smell bad like your describing, indicates something is wrong in your system. A slight odor from the water is normal because of the nitrification process, but pungent odors are not. Do you have enough bio media for your system ? Is your tank properly cycled ?, Is gravel cleaning frequency enough ?. Have you tested your water parameters recently ? Just some things to think about.

I have to agree here..... Water quality issues will cause bad smells. No healthy aquarium should stink.....period. Fix the issue instead of covering it up. Good luck with it man.

From my understanding, what gives it that "dirty, fishy smell" is a chemical that is not existent in a well-maintained, clean tank. I bought a tank that didn't have water changes frequent enough, and I'm sure the nitrAtes were through the roof. Oh my god, it stunk to high heaven. My husband called it "creek bed smell."

I don't use carbon in any of my tanks, and have never had a problem with this smell. I didn't even have to use carbon in the tank I bought that stunk, I just did my normal water changes, and it dissipated on its own, after cleaning out all the detritus/mulm and letting it air out for a few days before filling with water.

That chemical is called fishiepoopnpee.

i keep Chemi-pure in one of my tanks.. it's carbon with some other stuff. cures a mulititude of issues and makes it so i have to do fewer water changes.

other than that i rarely use carbon. i can't even remember the last time i bought bulk carbon pellets..

As I am reading the thread I have a ?.

How often do you take out the decor and actually move the substrate around?

This might be a cause. Another ? is this have you removed the canopy or top to see if some of the food got stuck to the inside and has begun to rot.

For moving substrate around, I have found that one of my old potato mashers worked wonders so I dedicated it to that purpose.

I really do not use carbon in my tanks except for my home 65g where I recently put my very first sting ray. Could not pass it up $50 for baby ray. So I have a rena 4 on the tank with 4 bags of chemi pure. I made sure to keep the first filter on the tank for a good period of time so that the added rena could get good and seeded.

A thought for you with carbon, when you think the bag is done take a rolling pin and roll over the bag a few times trying to crush it a bit so that the structure of the carbon inside cracks and semi refreshes as the inside of the carbon granule gets newly exposed. More milage from the stuff then.

Anyone who says bad odor in the OP's tank has obviously not fed hikari carnivore or massivore. It seriously stinks, no matter how healthy your tank is. They formulated it to stink because stinky food attracts predators like catfish and bichirs.

As to answer your question. I got 3 bichirs in my tank. My FX5 media basket each contains Matrix. 1L of Matrix per bichir should be more than enough

Last I checked the 3N, it goes 0,0,10

Gravel vac like once per 2 week, no spot left unvac

Negative, I use a feeding tube to deliver the goods, so none of the pellets should be in the canopy.

Hurray! :headbang2

Yes I had to cut down on feeding massivore cause I have a semi open sump. My tank is in my living room so the wife got tired of the odor. It smelled but wasn't super stinky.

Now test the tank again. Is the matrix prefilterd in the fx5 ?

Take the carbon out.
Don't feed or change the water for 48hours do your tests and see if it still smells.

What do you mean by prefilter?

I don't put anything else in the baskets other than matrix and 1 bag of carbon on the top. I depend on the 6 sponges for mechnical filtration.

I don't think carbon is really bad for my tank since im not going with live plants in it. I'll replace the carbon once per month (or until the stink comes back which indicate my carbon is exhausted).
