So you tried to remove the trim(frame)? Bad idea if so, I would suggest never ever doing this. It's not easy as you found out. There's no need for it anyways. I don't have a clue why it did that though. I've never seen that happen.

I had to replace the front panel on the tank. The only way to do that is to remove the frame!

I think you mean to say that vinegar is made of several acids, but the one you smell is acetic acid. Acetic acid also happens to be released during the curing process of *most* silicones, leading to the similar smell.

Silicone is not made up primarily of vinegar.

I was thinking the same thing. Silicone is an element, therefore it cannot be made up of something else

Ooops sorry. I thought you took it apart to resilicone it. Sounds bad either waY.
