GECKO Experiment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, I am quite excited at the prospect..of course they will have water but no food untill I get a feeling for the "roach problem "..

I was advised to use Tokay because they eat like hell, climb everywhere in search of food ( and therefore will follow and ambush the roaches anywhere ).

Was also told that they are biters and therefore will not touch them withot gloves.

As I understand they only function in the night. So an escape during the day ( most probable period for someone to leave a door open ) won't happen, right??

It should work if they don't escape. I have done the same, but with chickens. Works like a charm

Now that would be the end of it, with me institutionalized, if I brought chickens to an apartment in central Lisbon and , what for, for what purpose, the neighbourhood would, interested and curious, ask,..for taking care of a roach infestation:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 the ashamed answer, accompanied by one or two tears rolling down her face, would be....:grinno:

Very bad situation i am afraid Miguel.. i hate to be the tider of bad news.. but this better work because roaches are a very very bad thing to have .. especially since you cannot exterminate with poisons etc.. they multiply like crazy and the babies are soooo small they will be everywhere in no time.. i wish you the best on your Tokay experiment but it better work.. because what is left to do.. let the arows out?? :D

The chickens was not a joke, actually. I have let 2 1/2 grown chicks loose in an infested greenhouse (I would leave the lights off so the roaches come out) Turn the lights on suddenly, and released the chickens out of my arms - they ate every roach in sight before they could run away. I did this for a few nights in a row - then no more roaches - and the chickens went back outside. Took about 5 minutes each night. Repeat once or twice a night, for a few nights, and that's the end of it.

WOW!!! How the heck did this get posted numerous times?

Please take care of this, thanks!

wow that is awesome remedy..

You'd have to make sure they don't escape, last thing you want is a ferrel population building up and knowing it was your fault. You could probably use lots of small geckos, most of them would climb anywhere. I'd use house geckos.

What happends to the geckos once they run out of food?

my day gecko got out for like a week and i noticed a down size in spider in tight unvisted corners of the room...that i was visiting to find her...so should work just be willing to keep em or hand them off to some one who wants em once the job is done...i think to much of an extended free roam of the room could cause problems in the future ... plus you dont wnat those things to escape...

Then it is up to you if you want to keep them free range, or you can let go some prey items for them. A lot of people have them in herp rooms where there are plenty of escapes anyway (although i realise this isn't the case), but again i must stress the point, you have to be careful they don't escape, i would say leaving the door open isn't a great idea.
