Unions are outdated and have forced the prices up. Why not move your plant to Canada or Mexico to get out from under the Unions??
There are Unions in Canada as well...Huge ones, I live pretty close to a Ford Plant and the workers there are treated like royalty, so to speak, their union is really strong. Then again, they fired many of their workers as well.

Speaking of gas, i filled up at $1.97 last night!! It was the first time since highschool I can remember filled up my car from near empty for less then $20!!

Get used to it... if demand is down then these prices will keep falling.

gas prices are determined by when they bought the oil... for examples when the oil prices were at $110 a barrel we were paying close to $4 Now that its at $64 we are paying half @ $2.15 the national average....

if the barrel goes down to $40 we will pay like $1.50 lol that would be great

Obama has already started to work his magic....:headbang2

Well in that case good, fire them all and then hire illegals to build quality cars for little more than the cost of materials. And then give Obama the credit for it!!!!!:D

:chillpill: before this gets off track and closed please

Get back on track with no further political references.

It's not like the car companies didn't see this coming for over a decade. But, did they make the same strides in hybrid or alternative fuel technology that foreign auto designers made? Nope, they dragged their heels and only matched the options available on US vehicles from technologies developed by foreign auto designers.

Time for junkyard chassis searching and electric conversions...

So on one hand jobs should be saved but on the other hand those jobs should only be saved if they are low-wage non-union?? Although a great scapegoat, the union is not responsible for GM's demise: bad leadership is. From JC's article it is clear that retiree benefits are weighing heavily on GM's balance sheet, NOT current wages.

GM is a terribly run company. They have been for years. Look at this 1990 Fortune Mag article if you are interested in learning about why Japanese companies have surpassed Americans: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1990/10/22/74201/index.htm

GM's current crisis CANNOT be blamed on the economy, competition, or union wages, only on poor leadership. Current economic conditions are uncovering GMs many operational flaws, but are not the cause of their woes. Why did they create a Hummer brand 8 years ago that they are now selling off? Could they not forsee that the market was headed in the opposite direction? Easy and immediate profits led them to make bad long-term decisions. Japanese automobile companies were similarly led astray, just not as severely.

GM actually has rooms for people who do not have work to do. They can go there and hang out until they are assigned work. This is required because GM cannot simply lay off people that they don't need. It is required under the union contract that GM must employ a certain number of workers. The Union destroyed the American car. I would believe the leadership is subpar as well, but the union gets the blame.

J1 you just love bringin the good news, lol.Go watch cartoons for a while, somethin happy,jk,

I wonder what will happen to the people who have ordered vehicles if they do completly fail. My G/Fs aunt ordered one of the new camaros. I wonder if she will still get it. b/c It's something like at least 6 months beofre she gets. it b/c the got the convertable.

Either way the jap. market isn't doing real great right now either. I work for bridgestone. Makeing car seat. (yes bridgestone makes foam) And we made the seats for the tundras and sequoias Now they both suck on gas. But they did halt the production on these vehicles for 90 days. Which forced our FIRST layoff. Then things with the other cars. Accord and Civic slowed down enough that they layed off again. then we were running so slow that they layed of a THIRD time. and switched us from 3 8 hour shifts to 2 10 hours shifts. Now less then a year ago we were forced to work at LEAST 52 hours weekly without saturday or sunday. So at least 3 of our 5 days were 12 hours. now we have to hope for downtime so we can work the weekend and make ends meet. The next time something big happens at my play it WILL close. and then there will only be ONE factory left in a town of over 15K people. When this time less then 5 years ago they didn't have enough people to do all the jobs.
