Generator

This may seem like an odd question, but how do you heat your house?

If you use natural gas, then just get a backup generator that will run using that. It will be much cheaper to fuel than if you use gasoline. The only real pain might be hooking it up to the gas line, but it will be much more reliable and much cleaner. They are definitely not as cheap as a gar generator, but it's a lot less hassle because it's already connected to its fuel source and will automatically kick on if the power goes out which is great if you're not home. We have one for our house, and it can run pretty much everything in the house indefinitely (unless the natural gas were to go out for some reason, too). These generators also can run on propane, so that's another option if you don't have access to natural gas.
